Amazing Benefits of Gargling
Salt and salt water have been used for thousands of years to heal the body. Healers and doctors across time recorded its miraculous curing powers on injured tissues. This is an important remedy to remember this winter when sore throats and upper respiratory infections abound.
One of the best and simplest treatments for a sore throat is a saltwater gargle. While salt water is acidic in nature it helps kill acid producing bacteria. Salt water helps create an alkaline environment in your mouth. Bacteria and their waste products do not like this. They thrive in acidic environments. Gargling kills the bacteria that create that terrible sore throat! Salt water is also astringent and speeds healing time by reducing inflammation in the tissues and drawing them together. Gargling with warm water promotes circulation and enhances healing.
Saltwater gargle will also benefit your oral health. When the saliva returns to its natural alkaline state there is evidence that teeth can re-mineralize (reduction in dental caries) and gum tissue is rejuvenated. Try a saltwater rinse 2-3x week to promote oral health and reduce occurrence of winter colds and flu. If you are battling an acute infection gargle every 2-3 hours. You will be surprised at how quickly your throat will feel better.
Directions:
Place ¼-1/2 tsp of salt (any salt is fine but sea salt is best) into 1 cup of warm water. Stir to help salt dissolve. Swish the solution around in your mouth and bring it to the back of your throat. Gargle for at least 30 seconds if you can. Spit and repeat several times.
