If you’ve ever visited an acupuncturist and noticed a gentle warmth radiating from a small, aromatic herb, you may have experienced moxibustion. This ancient therapy, often used alongside acupuncture, has been practiced for thousands of years in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and continues to be a powerful tool for promoting circulation, easing pain, and supporting the body’s natural healing processes.
In this post, we’ll explore what moxibustion is, how it works, and why it’s especially beneficial for certain health concerns and seasonal transitions. You’ll also find helpful resources on how moxibustion fits into the larger framework of Chinese Medicine, including connections to the Wood element and spring nutrition.
What Is Moxibustion?
Moxibustion (often shortened to “moxa”) is a form of heat therapy in Traditional Chinese Medicine. It involves the burning of mugwort (Artemisia vulgaris) — a spongy herb known for its warming and invigorating properties — near or on specific acupuncture points on the body.

There are two main types of moxibustion:
- Direct moxibustion: A small cone of moxa is placed directly on the skin and ignited. The practitioner removes it just before it burns the skin, creating a pleasant warming sensation.
- Indirect moxibustion: Moxa is burned near the skin, usually on the end of an acupuncture needle or formed into a stick that is hovered over specific areas. This method is more commonly used in clinical settings for safety and comfort. We use smokeless moxibustion in our offices.
How Does Moxibustion Work?

From a Traditional Chinese Medicine perspective, moxibustion works by tonifying Qi, expelling cold, and stimulating blood flow. Many ailments in TCM are believed to be caused or worsened by internal cold and stagnation. Moxa’s deep, penetrating warmth helps “warm the meridians,” encouraging the smooth flow of energy (Qi) and blood throughout the body.
From a modern biomedical perspective, moxibustion may offer several physiological benefits:
- Increases circulation, which supports tissue healing and reduces inflammation
- Modulates the immune system, improving your body’s resilience
- Stimulates endorphin release, reducing pain and promoting relaxation
- Enhances mitochondrial function, which may support cellular energy production
In fact, a 2023 randomized controlled trial published in the Journal of Traditional Chinese Medicine found that patients with chronic fatigue syndrome who received moxibustion treatments three times per week for four weeks reported significantly improved energy levels, reduced fatigue scores, and better overall quality of life compared to the control group. The researchers concluded that moxibustion may be a beneficial therapy for improving vitality in people with energy depletion.

Conditions Moxibustion May Help
Moxibustion is often used as a complementary therapy for a wide range of conditions, including:
- Chronic pain (especially low back pain, arthritis, or joint stiffness)
- Digestive disorders (such as bloating, diarrhea, or poor appetite)
- Menstrual issues (like irregular periods or painful cramps)
- Cold hands and feet or a general feeling of being chilled
- Fatigue and low energy, particularly when due to a Yang deficiency
- Injury recovery, where circulation and warmth can speed healing
One well-known use of moxibustion is in helping to turn breech babies before birth. Clinical research supports its effectiveness in promoting fetal repositioning when applied at the right time and point (usually Bladder 67, located on the outer pinky toe).
What to Expect During Moxibustion
If you’re receiving moxibustion during your acupuncture treatment, here’s what you might expect:
- Your practitioner may use a moxa stick (similar to a cigar) to warm specific points or areas on your body
- You’ll feel a gentle heat, never burning or uncomfortable
- There may be a light, herbal aroma from the mugwort
- After treatment, you may feel deeply relaxed, energized, or simply warm and cozy

Is Moxibustion Right for You?
Moxibustion is generally safe for most people when administered by a trained practitioner. It’s especially effective if you:

- Feel cold easily or have poor circulation
- Suffer from chronic conditions that worsen in cold weather
- Are you recovering from injury or fatigue
- Experience menstrual irregularities
- Want to support your immune system and energy as seasons change
However, moxa may not be appropriate for everyone, especially in cases of inflammation, fever, or certain skin sensitivities. Your practitioner will determine the best course of action based on your individual diagnosis and needs.
