Acupuncture and Prostate Health

Whether you are looking to reduce your risk of prostate disease or treat an existing condition, acupuncture help prostrate issues. Because of its holistic approach, acupuncture can help relieve symptoms associated with prostate problems like frequent and painful urination.

A report titled Traditional Chinese Medicine and Prostate Health published by Pacific College found Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) to be effective in the treatment of prostatitis, urinary tract infections, and symptoms associated with prostate cancer supportive care.

There have been multiple studies that have proven acupuncture helpful. A Chinese study published in 2008 found that electroacupuncture, a form of acupuncture, had a 96.4 percent rate of effectiveness for treatment.

In modern practice of acupuncture, each patient is assessed and given a treatment plan to reduce their symptoms. Acupuncture accomplishes this by addressing the body as a whole and using acupuncture points to stimulate meridians that then return the body to balance and natural flow.

Prostate Health

The prostate is a walnut-sized gland located between the bladder and penis, just in front of the rectum. The urethra, which lets urine out of the body from the bladder, runs through the center of the prostate. This gland secretes fluid that nourishes and protects sperm. With ejaculation, the prostate squeezes this fluid into the urethra and is expelled with the sperm as semen.

Inflammation of the prostate, called prostatitis, may be due to infection. The prostate may also become enlarged with aging. Most men over age 50 may experience this, with possible difficulty with urination. One in seven men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer, the most common type of cancer for men after lung cancer. Prostate cancer is quite successfully treated, as only one in thirty eight men will die from this.

Acupuncture is a time-tested system of medicine used to maintain and improve the health of the prostate. In Chinese Medicine, the Kidney system is understood to be generally responsible for reproductive and urinary health. The Kidney system also supports the health of the lower back, the knees, the bones, teeth, and hearing. We typically see many of these parts of the body change with aging. Chinese Medicine calls this aging process Kidney decline, with such resulting symptoms. In order to improve prostate health, acupuncture and Chinese herbal formulas are used to nourish this particular system.

How Does Acupuncture Work For Prostrate Health?

The principle behind this practice is that our bodies have a natural energy flowing through them at all times. When our body’s energies become stuck or stagnant, our bodies are susceptible to disease and illness, including prostate cancer and prostatitis. Prostate cancer is one of the most common forms of cancer among men in the United States with around 290,000 new cases diagnosed each year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. If you are at risk or currently dealing with prostate cancer or prostatitis, you are not alone.
