Prostate Health
The prostate is a walnut-sized gland located between the bladder and penis, just in front of the rectum. The urethra, which lets urine out of the body from the bladder, runs through the center of the prostate. This gland secretes fluid that nourishes and protects sperm. With ejaculation, the prostate squeezes this fluid into the urethra and is expelled with the sperm as semen.
Inflammation of the prostate, called prostatitis, may be due to infection. The prostate may also become enlarged with aging. Most men over age 50 may experience this, with possible difficulty with urination. One in seven men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer, the most common type of cancer for men after lung cancer. Prostate cancer is quite successfully treated, as only one in thirty eight men will die from this.
Acupuncture is a time-tested system of medicine used to maintain and improve the health of the prostate. In Chinese Medicine, the Kidney system is understood to be generally responsible for reproductive and urinary health. The Kidney system also supports the health of the lower back, the knees, the bones, teeth, and hearing. We typically see many of these parts of the body change with aging. Chinese Medicine calls this aging process Kidney decline, with such resulting symptoms. In order to improve prostate health, acupuncture and Chinese herbal formulas are used to nourish this particular system.
Sexual Health
A man’s quality of life may be very limited by sexual dysfunction, including impotence, premature ejaculation, under or overactive libido. There may be mental, emotional, and physical reasons for these challenges.
Each man that is seen at Integrative Acupuncture is diagnosed as an individual, as Chinese Medicine seeks to find the imbalance that is creating dysfunction. As mentioned above, the Kidney system is typically stimulated to improve these conditions of sexual health and men’s health in general.
Stress, Anxiety, Insomnia
One of the most common uses of acupuncture is in creating relaxation. Specific neurotransmitters are released from the brain to induce this state during the treatment, which will have a lasting and accumulating effect. Stress is a major factor in various aspects of our health, including our sleep quality, our moods and desires, pain levels, and our relationships.
